how do you embody kai's breath*life*flow lifestyle?
i'm a big believer in living in the moment. which for me means stopping and taking stock of all the beauty and love around me. when something difficult has arisen i ask myself: "what can this moment teach me?" or, "what can i learn from this person?" inevitably, i learn something and grow.
what's your beauty secret? or must have beauty product?
if i wasn't an actress, i'd probably be a beauty editor. here's a few:
- radius natural silk floss (clean teeth and 100% biodegradable!)
- sulwhasoo overnight vitalizing mask (a real miracle worker)
- kevin murphy motion lotion (my ultimate curly girl product - the perfect amount of hold without getting crunchy)
- kai deodorant (who would have thought armpits could smell this good?)
- biologique recherche creme masque vernix (so rich, so good)
- kate somerville eradikate (cuts off a day or two of living with a pimple)
- sacha juan dark dry powder shampoo (my hair is not this dark naturally - this helps in-between coloring)
- odacite pure elements b1 + c serum concentrate (makes those pimples never exist).
go-to lipstick color?
charlotte tillbury "k.i.s.s.i.n.g." lipstick in bitch perfect. the perfect nudey/pinky shade. i used this with clinique lip pencil in lipblush for the emmys party this year. and yes, i use my phone as a mirror.
what color nail polish are you wearing right now?
i just finished shooting grey's anatomy and have begun season 4 & 5 of the last ship, so i had to say goodbye to my chrome acrylics that miss mimi at pampered hands was hooking me up with. i love doing crazy nails during my down time because my character on "the last ship" is busy trying to save the world and kill bad guys (as you do...) therefore she's not going to be getting fun manicures. but i still love to keep my hands feeling great so i keep cnd solar oil and kai hand cream on my bedside table to use before i fall asleep.
the other trick for my feet is i cover my toes and heels with the super rich body butter then put on socks before i go work out. it's like a free pedicure. my feet never get dry or cracky.
what do you love most about where you live? any secret spots you love to go to?
my favorite thing about my neighborhood is that we live around the corner from jessica koslow's squirl restaurant. it's our go-to spot for coffee, lunch and sweets. she's a food genius and she's just published an incredible book of recipes, "everything i want to eat." which is serendipitously also everything i want to eat.
favorite date spot?
bestia in downtown LA and a play at redcat theater.
ultimate getaway?
my ultimate getaway is camping in yosemite national park. my family has gone every year since we moved to california and i can't begin to describe how beautiful it is. every single time we round the bend to see the view of el capitan and half dome i feel simply stunned. this last trip we took i hiked (over sixteen miles!) to the top of half dome with my brother in law and his wife. it was the hardest day but so worth it. we got back to camp so stinky, tired, happy and hungry! my husband, who had been watching the kids all day handed me a glass of rose (hello, wonderful man!). we were staying at a housekeeping camp where they have showers (so fancy!) and i grabbed my stuff and had the best shower of my life. i came back and my husband wouldn't stop going on about how good i smelled.
i'm a big fan of travel sized anything. i have my "go-to" bag of skin/hair/body products ready because work out of town pops up quickly, as do free weekends to get away. i like to be ready. the product in this set that really surprised me with how much i loved having was the kai home fine linen wash. when i was traveling through europe this summer (for over a month) i would drop off all my family's dirty clothes at a laundromat but i didn't trust them not to ruin my bras/undies. it was great to be able to wash my "smalls" in the skin and hang to dry overnight.
morning person or night owl?
i'm a night owl that has to wake up early. so... i'm a coffee person.
currently craving?
this mac and cheese i've just made for my daughter. i love kid food!
what book are you reading currently?
a lot of raymond carver.
kai obsession?
my new favorite is the kai reed diffuser. i've got mine in my bathroom - i love that the nature of such a beautifully fragranced product is that it smells so good you just have to stop and take a breath. and stopping and taking a breath can seriously do wonders, especially in the morning when you want to start your day off right. it's also the perfect thank you or hostest gift. i give it to costumers, hair & makeup artists, everyone. i love introducing friends to the kai fragrance with such a luxurious product that they never know they needed.

Thank you for this wonderful insight into one of my all time favorite actresses. I first fell in love with her on Legend of the Seeker. She embodied Kahlan so perfectly. And her brilliant portrayal of Dottie Underwood on Agent Carter stole the show! Her love of and deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around us, makes me love her all the more. And when I walk by my kai diffuser and take a deep breath, I will have a deeper smile knowing one of my favorite people shares the same experience with me. :)
